From the Armenian perspective, there is the irony of needing Russia and Iran's protections to hold off an expansionist Azerbaijan and Turkey. I fear that as such, Armenia may be an "orphan" re: Western support. It would seem to make sense for "non-aligned" ex-Soviet states (the "Stans", Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, Chechnya) to link up in some sort of common defense pact (tricky as there would be Christian nations trying to get along with Islamic ones). I suppose that Azerbaijan would then link up with Turkey, and NATO would at least try to promote a non-escalation between Iran-Turkey-Russia-nonaligned blocks. Maybe this is already kinda happening, Russia learning it doesn't have strength to bully ex-Soviets, China waiting in the wings? I've always felt that ultimately, Russia has China to fear more than anyone.
