Great perspective. Wind/solar would be great, but as you say the intermittency creates problems currently, awaiting better storage. In the meantime, Next Gen Nuclear and/or Carbon Capture Natural Gas may be needed to fill the gaps. It always seemed to me that our nation should gang up on rooftop solar with battery backup (ie solar microgrids) since there is HUGE available area (with little env impact, unlike deserts) while batteries have no weight restrictions (unlike in EVs). This would also combat transmission loss.
