Great points, the pre-WW II isolationists a good parallel (they were also closet racists). We were in Hungary in '19, the guest of artifact hunters scanning my father's B24 crash site. They were very good to us, but kind of in league w Serbians etc w a "white power" look (I bought lunch, glad we didn't talk politics). I believe Carlson, Gaetz, Taylor-Greene, Trump etc promote the "law and order, anti-immigrant, 'anti liberal press'" aspects of Orban/Putin, which is of course a veneer for fascist white power/ethnic cleansing/end of democracy. You're right also that Trump end game is likely a Civil War with Putin's help. It used to be that we could at least trust Republicans to be a hedge against Soviets/totalitarian societies (but their "isolationism" has weakened numbers to only 50% pro-Ukraine, thankfully McConnell and Graham holding the line). "Isolationists" don't like China though, who run a system similar to Russia/Hungary but made the mistake of not being white? I don't think we should jump into every international crisis, but free-market democracy does need to be a hedge against fascist hegemony/ethnic cleansing (as WW II showed). It would help if we "cleaned up" our Democracy brand here at home (tightened borders, drugs, homeless, guns, overbroad PC). Our minorities may have legitimate gripes, but we need to remember we are probably the most successfully integrated society and if we're not careful we could lose everything (WW II taught us that lesson...do we need to relearn via WW III?)
