Having many ancestors that participated in these wars (many of whom later were Shaysite farmers at odds with greedy Bostonians), I've always felt that the genesis was New England merchants wanting to take over trade from Britain (with freedom loving Freemasons and Native American fearing inlanders later joining the fight). It became one war with several different regional purposes. Yes, it seems that the "Intolerable Acts", taxation etc were a part of a perhaps temporary thing that may have been lifted through negotiation. No matter though, the war got the job done and the 1783 Treaty of Paris gave us very favorable terms.
