I always wondered, was Miss Kitty in "Gunsmoke" a Wild West prostitute and does that explain why Matt, Chester, Festus, and Doc never got married?

I visited ghost town Bodie. CA several years ago and picked up a book called "Rosa May: The Search for a Mining Camp Legend". She was the prostitute with a heart of gold, who charitably gave to the sick miners and orphans, yet was not allowed to be buried with the respectable people. The book is quite interesting as the author almost obsessively researches the details of her life, including the rising/falling career arc of a Wild West Prostitute and their dealings with VD (often things containing toxic substances like mercury) and pregnancy.
