I am just finishing "The House of God" which was recommended by an MD friend. It gives one a new perspective on medical care, seeming more a palliative than a cure (ie if you want to live long, eat right, exercise, don't smoke, have good genes, avoid the doctor). I suppose there's a long tradition in medical care of giving patients hope, which may in turn prolong life to a degree. Computer models may help with practical life expectancy predictions, but seem awfully cold in the process.
