I suppose the Ten Commandments and Beatitudes are bedrock, and most of the rest somewhat apocryphal, to explain the many paradoxes that emerge. I too have friends that are Biblical "literalists", I don't say anything so as to be polite, but I'm always thinking:
1) What about Leviticus (almost Monty Python silly and paradoxical)
2) The supposed 10,000 yr +- Biblical timeline that flies in the face of bedrock radioactive decay evidence and Clarence Darrow's "If God invented the Sun on the 4th day, how was a day measured on the 1st-3rd days?".
Many Biblical events are certainly true in the general: There was certainly an Exodus, Babylonian Captivity, Kings David/Solomon, a big flood, likely a Sampson, but two of EVERY animal? Lot's wife a pillar of salt? Hmm, logistics. Christianity could be a really good thing if maybe three simple, rational thoughts emerged:
1) Test of Faith: Simply doing what Jesus would do. Salvation would be contingently be in Jesus' hands (this eliminates the phonies, like Trump)
2) Merge known Science with what's generally known about Bible (abandon 10k yr timeline, but entertain Scientific "Fine Tuned Universe", "Many Worlds", and "Simulation Hypothesis" theories). After all, science is mostly nuts and bolts, if God=Nature then most everyone agrees.
3) Re-edit the Bible and practices to be more consistent with original intent (ie take out the "Romanized" idolatry, priest hierarchies, marginalization of women/minorities...some of this already done with Reformation), acknowledge Old Testament commonality with Judaism and Islam.
There may also need to be greater moral clarity that pertains to modern technology...is a 2nd coming needed?
