I thought that most of southern Italy had genetics in common with Greece and the nearby islands. Northern Italy definitely has more German and Frankish blood, central Italy more true Roman? With the recent DNA discovery that AD 800 "Vikings" were not a distinct race but more a confederation of international raiders (also true of Scythians and other ancient people), maybe "Romans" were also such a confederation?
