I'm retired and just returned from 2nd long international trip (Africa, Middle East, Europe). Got into interesting discussion with Poly Sci Brit student in Tanzania, in which he favored abolishment of Royalty. Being American Brit 400 yrs removed I played devil's advocate, saying that when in Fiji, NZ, Australia and elsewhere last year, there was surprising international loyalty to Queen etc, helping glue together the Commonwealth, which was a kind of defacto NATO, providing a holding action against authoritarianism. He nicely/politely replied that NATO was a helluvalot more important/powerful than the Commonwealth.

It seems US/England are made to sometimes wallow in shame for perceived imperialistic misdeeds (sometimes justified), but the net effect on the world has been the spread of Democracy/Capitalism which has provided unprecedented freedoms worldwide, protections from brutal suppressions, hopes/pathways for self-governance, population stabilities and a better environment (I'm offending our Socialists here but too bad...your track record is dismal?). We in US have a love/hate relationship with Brits (not unlike other former colonies), but where would we have been without them? Not sure Charlie, William etc can uphold high standards of Queen Elizabeth II, but if it looks like a duck etc, it all seems to work.
