I've always felt that half of sin was self-righteousness (the ones that make much of other's sins, but are actually doing much of the damage). Nevertheless, despite the popularity of "PC" (possibly an attempt to encourage people to be polite, at least publicly), it would seem that never before in history have we had so much open dialog and critique (and resultant turmoil)? The West has always had lesser circles of brave inquiry surrounded by hoards of mediocrity (as described by Nietzsche, Rand, Mencken and others). No different now, but my gosh, look at the overwhelming amounts of information available to us today! (yes, much contaminated, but also good stuff if you know where to look)
