My son had a French girlfriend from Marseilles, and I slowly learned of the complicity of some French with the Nazis (naturally, its a very sore subject to this day). And I was conditioned by "Casablanca", "The Great Escape", and other films to think all French were in the French Resistance! We think of France as left-leaning but there are many right-wing elements, similar to the present-day US.
