"Next Generation" nuclear power (led by Bill Gates TerraPower) promises to make nuclear power safer using liquid sodium coolants, modern electronics, and other new technologies. In engineering circles, it was said that Chernobyl was caused by inability to read a massive wall of chart recorders fast enough to respond to a crisis. Many old plants of all kinds were dogs for this reason. In my career, I've watched modern SCADA controls emerge (computerized plant systems) which are much more efficient, but of course prone to hacking. With talk of natural gas "bans", there will be a huge increase in electricity demand, and most engineers believe that given the high cost of energy storage/relative infancy of solar/wind/etc, things like Next Generation and Natural Gas CCS, though not perfect, may be needed to transition, a lesser of the evils thing. Nuclear/renewable produced Hydrogen is also emerging. Don't forget that HVDC and solar microgrids could vastly increase efficiencies by lowering transmission line loss (and reducing storage need). Funny how many left leaners see a kind of solar/wind biomass transition overnight, while right leaners tend towards the CCS/Nuclear avenue (well, at least they are forgetting about coal), Gates/Biden seem to believe we'll need a combination, all things considered.
