1) I've met several Mexican-American "first families" in CA (those whose families predated Bear Flag Rebellion in 1846). Imagine how they feel when bigots tell them to "go back to where they came from".

2) The movie "Warlock" (1959) is a kind of retelling of the various Tombstone stories, which may show a pattern in "Wild West". Rowdy cattlemen were often Southerners, City "lawmen" Northerners who ran gambling saloons on the side, a kind of organized crime, naturally they hated each other. Religious farming families soon got sick of both and took over by sheer numbers (also seen in "Shane"?)

3) The Native American story is not profiled enough in retellings of the American West (as you point out). You're right, they suffered greatly from being on the wrong side, first w French and then w British in Revolution and War of 1812. My take:
