That the rogueish male somehow wins over the high-minded female for a happy-ending marriage of values (and betterment of the backward-thinking townies), is the engine of many a musical. It's also sometimes the backdrop for real-life robust/unwashed male meets reticent, armchair-righteous female, two sort-of compensating forces (going on since beginning of time). No need to apologize for this and other 50s musicals, sure beats all the modern shoot 'em up gratuitous sex & violence. If a guilty pleasure, a voice somewhere is your mind is also saying "how bad can these men be if they can sing and dance like that?"
