This is so true! Of course, it is difficult to characterize the vastness of injustice done to Native Americans in one article. Jared Diamond fans may subscribe to the "Guns, Germs, and Steel" theory, but there is more to the story. It is also possible that things like the Cocoliztli Epidemic in Mexico (in the 1500s, thought to be indigenous Salmonella or viral hemorrhagic fever brought on by drought) and inter-tribal warfare (exploited by European settlers) also contributed. In all, a sort of "perfect storm" (Europeans, natural disaster, unfavorable policies) that doomed the North American tribes. Tragic that surviving Algonquin DNA shows European Y-haplotype, Algonquin maternal haplotype (consistent with sad genocidal tendency in history for males to be killed off while invaders interbreed with females). In an era when so much attention is given to reparations for history/aftermath of slavery, shouldn't some at least equal attention be given to plight of the Native Americans? Shouldn't there be a National Holiday to remember someone like Tecumseh? (all we have now is "Discovery Day", sheesh). Dismissive N.A. comments by Rick Santorum were barely called out by the media (boy, does he need an education on Native American history!) Of course reparations would be vast (about 5 or 6 states worth?). A noble attempt to encapsulate an enormous subject...thanks, Grant!
