Truly the greatest Sci-Fi space spoof (Do "Spaceballs", "2001: A Space Travesty", and "Flesh Gordon" really compare?) Many underbilled cast members went on to fame (Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Justin Long, Enrico Colantoni, Missy Pyle, Jed Rees come to mind). It resonated with the observations of overwrought Trekkie fans (ie the previous SNL Shatner "Get a life!" skit), and what we were all saying at home while watching Star Trek in the late 60s (to Red Shirt guy..."run!" To Kirk or sexy alien heroine..."oops, there goes that torn uniform again!") Tim Allen is his usual cynical/funny self, Rickman pretty much reprising his "Die Hard" Hans Gruber of a few years prior. Funny that Weaver, who is the all-time kick-butt sci-fi heroine gets to play a softer, sexier send-up. Thing is, satire aside, the movie holds up pretty well on the basis of a serious sci-fi episode (which is why its outlasted the sillier "Spaceballs" kind of things). Funniest part indeed when Justin Long's Mom interrupts his saving the Universe to take out the trash.

I'm surprised they never made a sequel.
