We visited Dachau in 2019, along with Stalag Luft III where my father was imprisoned. Hats off to the 14th Armored Division who liberated Dachau and my father at nearby Moosberg (where over 110,000 Allied prisoners had been gathered). My Medium account of my father's story is at https://scottvern.medium.com/a-world-war-ii-bomber-pilots-crash-and-tale-of-survival-ccfce7103ac Towards the war's climax, the Germans guarding the Allied prisoners knew the end was coming, feared the Russians, hated the SS, and may have been reluctant soldiers to begin with...many stories of them helping the prisoners (perhaps out of kindness or to curry favor?) SS forced these guards to help them "fight to the death" but at least at Moosberg, the liberators managed to kill the SS exclusively, according to my father and other accounts.
