Well, containment seemed to work pretty well for the West during the Cold War. If the West can remain systematically patient, prosperous, and united it may work again, since there are elements within Russia and China (currently suppressed but surely powerful) that favor the Western system. That said, if Putin does go too far it might be relatively easy to end this thing with one well-placed missile, as someone may eventually betray him and he may not have a good succession plan. China would seem a much more formidable foe, in the long run.
