Yes, periodically every country capable of being seized by right-wing fanatics that dehumanize, to the horror of perhaps half that country. Yet some countries really seem to fall below baseline and into the "savage" category. Just got back from Tokyo, reading about Nanking and recent right wing Japanese government's attempts to squelch this event & portray WW II Japanese as victims. I just read that 99% of Allied POW's in Germany survived, only 45% of Allied POW's in Japan. Germany held to account somewhat by Nuremburg, Japan not so much thanks to MacArthur etc. My father's cousin died in Japanese prison camp, my father lucky (actually credited old German Luftwaffe guards for their survival). Of course Hiroshima/Nagasaki horrible, but argument that conservatively 1 million lives were saved somewhat bore out by numbers of Iwo/Okinawa/prisoner/Tokyo firebomb deaths. Also, Russia was about to enter and create a "north/south Japan" similar to Korea today:

Hard for me to put this all into perspective, but as bad as we Americans can be sometimes, we've never sunk to the level of mass indoctination, rape and pillage? (like Russia...a whole other level). Let's hope we continue to see the signs (Jan 6?) and compensate, stay on the side of the "civilized".
